Welcome Back | A New Chapter

December 15, 2025 by HM Shelton

It’s been a minute… two years, actually… and I’m glad you’re here. Life pulled me in a few different directions for a while…long shifts as a labor and delivery travel nurse, nights that felt like their own kind of landscape, and pockets of time where the camera had to wait. I felt the pull of the open country..and leaned in.

This site is getting a proper refresh because my photography is getting a proper refresh. I’m returning to the things that first made me pick up a camera: light that changes by the minute, wide horizons that force a quiet, slow kind of attention, and the thrill of finding a frame that feels like a small truth. My work has always been rooted in place — in the Southwest where I live, in the wind-bent edges of the Oregon Coast where I’ve traveled, and now in the sweeping, sometimes brutal beauty of the Mountain West. Over the coming weeks I’ll be bringing all of that into this space.

The foreground is a tan to yellow desert. Midground is gray to brown stacked mesa with a vivid blue sky with thin white clouds.

Home — the Southwest
The desert is my first language. There’s a clarity there: the colors are honest, the shadows are sharp, and the sky says more in a single hour than a city can in a day. I keep going back to the same stretches of land because every season, every storm, every hour of light changes the story. Expect intimate studies of mesas and washes, quiet portraits of scrub and stone, and the kind of empty space that invites your eye to wander.

The Oregon Coast — a different kind of light
I’ve spent a lot of time chasing that cool, saline light up and down the Oregon Coast. The coastline taught me to look for texture — the way fog softens outlines, the way wet rock reflects a late afternoon, the small dramas of tide pools and driftwood. Those images live differently than my desert work: they’re about motion and weather, about the edges where land meets sea.

A hazy yellow/orange sunset over a calm gray beach with blue/gray wave with whitecaps in the mid-distance.

What’s coming — Mountain West gallery and new work
I’m excited to announce I’ll be creating a dedicated gallery for the Mountain West. This series is a collection of recent trips into high country and big-sky country — alpine mornings, canyon light, and the hush of places you arrive at before anyone else does. It’s a project that feels like a natural next step: pulling together images that are about both scale and stillness.

What you can expect on the site
— New galleries: I’ll be uploading recent work regularly, including the Mountain West series.
— Stories behind the images: Short notes on how a photo was taken, why it mattered to me, and sometimes the little logistical messes that made a shot happen (or fail).
— Prints and inquiries: If you’re interested in prints, commissions, or collaborating on a project, you can reach out through the contact page. I’ll post more on availability and formats as I restock and curate the collections.
— A peek at process: Occasionally I’ll share editing thoughts, the decisions that shape a final image, and the gear that lives in my bag when I’m chasing light between shifts.

A snowy foreground with brown and tan dormant brush in the center. The mid ground is a blue lake with an island and reflections of white clouds. Back ground is gray and snow covered mountains under a funky blue sky.

Why this matters to me — and maybe to you
Working as a travel nurse has given me a strangely fortunate vantage point: it’s taught me how to hold intensity and tenderness at once. Those lessons find their way into my images — the patience of long waits, the elation of sudden beauty, the respect for fragile moments. Photography is my way of keeping that feeling intact. It’s a way to remember what a place felt like, not just what it looked like.

Come back often
This site will be active again. I’ll be adding galleries, updating projects, and sharing small dispatches from the road. If you like what you see, please check back frequently — there will be new uploads and fresh work to explore. If you’d like to hear when something new goes live, consider subscribing (there’s a sign-up on the site) or following along on social media.

Thank you
Thanks for stopping by. Whether you’re a fellow photographer, a collector, or someone who simply likes looking at landscapes, I’m glad to have you along for this next chapter. There’s a lot I want to share, and I can’t wait to see where the lens — and the road — take us next.

In the meantime, Peace, Love and Happiness to you and yours,

— HM
